Statement of Purpose

The Aboriginal Women’s Reclaiming Back Our Rights Corroboree is a Community Legal Education project of Wirringa Baiya Aboriginal Women’s Legal Centre.

The Corroboree was established to provide Aboriginal women with an opportunity to come together and tell their communities, the rest of Australia, and the world that we as Aboriginal women:

  • Are sick of the violence
  • Will not accept any excuse for violence
  • Recognise that domestic violence or sexual assault was not and is not part of our culture
  • Have the right to live with our children and our youth without fear of domestic violence, sexual assault, family or community violence, and
  • Demand that the violence must stop

Aims

  • To hold an annual Aboriginal Women’s Reclaiming Back Our Rights Corroboree on the last Thursday of October * To establish an Aboriginal Women’s Reclaiming Back Our Rights Corroboree as a National annual event
  • To rotate the hosting of the annual Aboriginal Women’s Reclaiming Back Our Rights Corroboree between different communities
  • To develop recommendations from the Aboriginal Women’s Reclaiming Back Our Rights Corroboree
  • To present recommendations to Federal, State and Local Governments
  • To focus on an alternative theme each year relating to either domestic violence, sexual assault and other associated issues perpetrated against Aboriginal women, children and youth

Objective’s

  • To educate and empower Aboriginal women
  • To educate Aboriginal women, children and youth on issues of domestic violence, and all forms of sexual assault
  • To provide Aboriginal women with information regarding their rights and how to seek legal advice
  • To assist Aboriginal women in seeking legal representation
  • To lobby Governments to be more responsive in meeting the needs of Aboriginal women, children and youth who are victims of crime
  • To meet with relevant Ministers to present recommendations from the Aboriginal Women’s Reclaiming Back Our Rights Corroboree
  • To challenge the acceptance of violence against our women, children and youth
